Wrinkles Due to Obesity?

Hielke and Sietse van de Kameleon, the de Boer brothers, the Olsen twins; remains fascinating that two pretty much identical people can exist in the World! Actually my fascination for twins has never gone much further than reading fun books about twins and my horoscope in one of the Dentist’s waiting room magazines. It is quite different for Dr. Darrick E. Antell. This plastic surgeon has made the study of twins his lifetime work. Thanks to his efforts we know that a major proportion of skin ageing is influenced by factors that are not in your genes but are “external”. His studies have shown us how quickly your skin ages by the sun, through smoking and now…through obesity.

Overweight before your fortieth…

More recent studies of twins made by Kathryn J. Martires has revealed even more to us. Her study demonstrated that obesity before the age of forty causes your skin to damage more easily through the sun making you look older at an earlier age. This is probably due to the increased consumption of bad carbohydrates and the unsaturated fats in people who are overweight. Furthermore, it has been known for some years in laboratory testing that putting animals on a diet slows down the ageing process (abstract). If these aren’t good enough reasons to shed those extra pounds once and for all….!

Wrinkles on a fuller face

A warning has been given. What also came out of Kathryn’s study was that if you are over 40, the situation changes slightly; then a fuller face can even mask wrinkles. But if I think again about the saying “as you get older, you need to choose between your face and your rear end” it’s not an easy choice. Mmmm, luckily I have a little bit of time to think about it! There is also some less conflicting news. The same study demonstrated that moderate alcohol consumption seems to, in fact, protect us from skin ageing. This all depends on the anti-oxidants added. In any case, that wine is going to taste even better this evening! And we won’t count those extra couple of calories….twins sun-smoking

On the left side of the picture you’ll see a woman who hasn’t smoked and has had little exposure to the sun, in contrast to her twin sister on the right side!
