Water is sacred for your skin

I went to Mexico in search of traditional methods used by the Maya on how to maintain their skin’s beauty. During the trip I found myself in this beautiful cenote, one of the thousands of water filled underwater caves. The cenotes are a sacred place for the Maya. They use the water and worship it in their sacred rituals and ceremonies. Does this water make skin more beautiful?

Special water?

The water in the cenote is supposed to be healing, but to be honest after carrying out some research I was unable to find anything particularly special about this water from a chemical point of view. However, the fact that water is important for beautiful skin is a given! And it was not only the Maya who knew, but in more recent times western research has also publicised this.

My tip for beautiful skin

My top tip for beautiful skin that costs you nothing more than a little bit of discipline: start the day with plenty of water. What I mean is probably more than you drink at the moment in the morning, at least 500 ml, that’s 2 or 3 glasses. Research has shown that drinking water just after you wake up is very important for your intestinal functioning and metabolism. And again that directly affects your skin.

An added bonus: drinking plenty of water in the morning also helps counteract kidney stones, weight gain, migraine, high blood pressure and above all improves your brain power and mood.

Also a new study shows that if you are optimally hydrated you can slow down the ageing process.

Some other water tips:

>Don’t drink anything from half an hour before to an hour and a half after eating. So I wouldn’t recommend a glass of water with a meal. What you can do then is drink 2 glasses as soon as you get up. Then drink at least 5 more glasses during the day: that adds up to 1.5 to 2 litres per day. There’s no need for more than that, because the extra amount won’t make your skin any more radiant.

> There is much discussion about the temperature of the water and studies carried out have not been conclusive. It looks as though lukewarm water is preferred, but my advice is to have it how you like it: then you’ll find it easier to stick with this habit.

All the best,

Jetske.
