How To Preserve Your Make-up In The Summer

In my last blog I talked about the best way to preserve your skincare products, especially when temperatures rise. But how does that affect make-up? And perfumes, aren’t they also sensitive to heat?

Make-up (foundation, bb and cc cream, concealer, lipstick, etc):
Even though you keep liquid make-up out of direct sunlight, the temperature in your bathroom can still rise dramatically, causing your make-up to melt or separate. If the temperature rises above 21 ̊ C the texture can alter. If you are going to a warmer climate store your make-up in a fridge if possible. But not too cold, as your products can again change below 0 ̊ C. In this way you’ll also instantly keep bacteria growth at bay. Nail varnish, by the way, is best kept in the fridge; this will make it last much longer.

Perfume
When I was younger I loved it, beautiful bottles of perfume. And my personal collection grew steadily each year, after Birthdays, Christmas, Sinterklaas, Valentine’s and Mother’s Day. Now I don’t care too much for it; I usually try to avoid fragrances on my skin. But part of my training to become a cosmetic chemist includes ‘fragrance’. Did you know that dozens of different chemicals are needed to produce a perfume which smells so sweet? And some of these substances can eventually react with each other, all of sudden causing your perfume to no longer smell like your perfume. Each formula varies but, in general, you can expect perfume to last for two years.

So, if you are someone who has built up a large collection, keep your perfumes in the fridge. Then they will last much longer! Just spray on your hair and clothes ok ;-).

Cool en route
Do you have a problem finding a suitable cool place to keep your products when travelling? Did you know that there are now cooled make-up bags available? Also ideal for your sun cream at the beach!
