Our Research

In the far and distant past, while I was still working in the Plastic Surgery Department, I always looked forward to Tuesdays: that was my research day. While my colleagues were highly enthusiastic about the thought of spending the whole day and night in A and E or the Operating Theatre, my blood was pumping faster because I could sit at my computer and analyse my first data results. It’s not that I didn’t like operations and all the activities surrounding them, it’s just that my DNA is embedded with a research gene.

My present work keeps me completely indulged. Carrying out research is the basis for my weblog, product line, skin book and sun campaign. Fortunately for me, I am in good company, being assisted by Matthijs and Annelies, two stars who are working full time for my Research Institute Skinwiser.

In our Rotterdam office, with the help of our microscopes, UV photo equipment and scientific measuring devices from Courage & Khazaka, we find out, in no time, everything about the skin barrier, hydration, sebum, pH value and the presence of bacteria, demodex mites and other annoying skin inhabitants. That’s useful, as it means we can thoroughly investigate new cosmetic ingredients, for example, to see if they actually work against skin conditions such as acne and Rosacea.

Alongside clinical research we also conduct literature research. An example of this is that last year we worked together with a group of students from the University of Wageningen to find out whether applying probiotics onto the skin could help in treating skin conditions such as acne, Rosacea and eczema.

My research committee has recently started its own website, so that I can share my findings with you. Here you can see the results of existing scientific research and also of our own studies, research projects with students and conference reports. It is there for people who would like to find out more about skin, skin care and skin protection. And if you have any free space in your diary, we do need ‘volunteers’ every now and then….!
