The Perfect Aftershave
Women may be great users of cosmetics, but more and more men are also using creams. Aftershave is a favourite among these. Which substances should such a product contain? And how can you prevent irritation after shaving?

Be careful of an ‘all too fresh’ feel

For many men, using an aftershave is a firm ritual. The product smells good and leaves the skin with a fresh feel after shaving. But that fresh feel and fine fragrance usually means that the product contains irritating ingredients such as perfume, alcohol and menthol. These substances actually damage the skin barrier function. The result: the skin can dehydrate and bumps may appear. You often see these on men’s jawline or neck. According to studies, around 40 percent of men have indicated that they have sensitive skin. More reason to check the ingredients in the aftershave.

Soothing substances in aftershave

Shaving is an art. Beard hairs are thick, course, different lengths and grow quickly. For a smooth result, you therefore need to go over the skin several times with a razor. This increases the risk of irritation after shaving. As well as this, men’s skin does not heal from a wound as quickly as women’s skin. It is therefore important to make sure that the skin is in good condition before shaving, so that after shaving it can be properly soothed. Niacinamide is a very suitable ingredient for this. This cosmetic champion makes the skin barrier function strong and healthy, contains soothing properties and regulates the sebum production, a fine added bonus for the usually more oily male skin.  Other soothing substances which an aftershave can do with are liquorice root extract, allantoin, evodia or beta glucan. Allantoin promotes further healing.

Which products are suitable?

The Moisturizer for normal to oily skin by Dr. Jetske Ultee contains 5% Niacinamide, liquorice root extract and evodia. The product also contains 5% Vitamin C and 1% Vitamin E.

What does a Toner do?

The Toner is not as well established in caring for the skin as the Cleanser. Even so, all skin can benefit from this fine product. A good Toner gives moisture to the skin and soothes her. The product removes the last traces of the Cleanser and furthermore ensures that the active substances in the Moisturizer are absorb more easily. Skin analysis Dr. Jetske Ultee
