Here are seven habits you should say farewell to in 2017 (but better still in 2016) if you want to grow old beautifully and healthily.<\/p>\n<p><b>1. Unprotected sunbathing<\/b><br \/>\nNinety percent of the symptoms of skin ageing are caused by solar radiation. If you want to grow old beautifully then use a sun cream. For years I have been advising this to be done on a daily basis, even on cloudy days and in the winter months. In particular, UVA rays penetrate straight through clouds and glass, and therefore can age your skin. And if you still aren\u2019t convinced, recent research has shown that daily use of a SPF 30 even reduces already aged skin. So apply!<\/p>\n<p><b>2. Smoking<\/b><br \/>\nEveryone knows how bad smoking is for your health, but many don\u2019t realise how smoking affects your skin. I can assure you that, by looking at their skin, I can see immediately if someone smokes! Smoking reduces the blood flow in the skin and the layer of dead skin cells becomes thicker, giving the face a greyer duller appearance. The skin under the eyes becomes darker due to the reduced blood flow. And smoking also causes wrinkles; not only the recognisable grooves around the mouth, but also on the rest of your face. <a class=\"xcms_external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/10411405\">Through smoking, the skin loses collagen and elastin<\/a>, whereby smokers quickly get deeper wrinkles. Furthermore, <a class=\"xcms_external\" href=\"http:\/\/link.springer.com\/chapter\/10.1007%2F978-3-642-32109-2_18\">smoking carries out a sizeable attack on the antioxidant supply in the skin<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>3. Stress<\/b><br \/>\nStress isn\u2019t good for your skin either. In times of stress, the amount of stress hormone (cortisol) increases in your body, potentially causing spots. In so doing, a chronically increased level of cortisol leads to a deteriorated barrier functioning of the skin. This can allow more moisture to escape and the skin slowly becomes dry and dull. The skin may also become irritated, infected or red. Chronic (long term) stress causes, above all, accelerated ageing of the skin. In simple terms, the increase in cortisol causes your body to make chemicals which destroy the collagen in the skin. Enough reason to, at last, start taking it easy!<br \/>\n<b><br \/>\n4. Sleep deprivation<\/b><br \/>\nAn increase in the cortisol hormone is also caused by a lack of sleep. I have just told you why <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dr-jetskeultee.com\/blog\/ageing-due-to-lack-of-sleep\">that is not good at all for your skin<\/a>. Alongside this, insufficient sleep reduces the production of melatonin and this is <a class=\"xcms_external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16150102\">a hormone which helps your skin to heal and make new collagen<\/a>. It is a super powerful antioxidant. Do try to get enough sleep. And let your skin unwind.<\/p>\n<p><b>5. Alcohol overconsumption<\/b><br \/>\nA wine every now and then isn\u2019t bad. However, peering into the glass (too far) regularly is not advisable for people with rosacea. Alcohol has a vasodilating effect and that is not what you want if you have those rosy cheeks. And did you know that drinking <a class=\"xcms_external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23147451\">a glass of alcohol has a direct impact on the amount of antioxidants in your skin?<\/a> And the result of this is that your skin is less able to protect itself from the sun.<\/p>\n<p><b>6. Too much simple sugars<\/b><br \/>\nSugar causes wrinkles. This relates, in particular, to simple sugars. To simply summarize, these sugars fix onto the collagen and elastin in the skin, causing damage. We know from studies that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dr-jetskeultee.com\/blog\/acne-and-carbohydrates\">sugar can also aggravate acne<\/a>. Too much pastry, white bread, chocolate and too many sweets increases your insulin levels. This causes more androgens to be produced which increases sebum production and gives you spots.<\/p>\n<p><b>7. Exposure to air pollution<\/b><br \/>\nThe seventh skin sin is exposing your skin to air pollution. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dr-jetskeultee.com\/blog\/how-do-you-protect-your-skin-against-environmental-pollution\" class=\"broken_link\">Air pollution<\/a> (in the form of fine dust particles) allows for the creation of free radicals and inflammatory markers in the skin. Pollution is also associated with collagen break down, pigment forming and a change in sebum production. In people with skin disorders, air pollution can also cause an increase in sensitivity. Age beautifully? Don\u2019t just protect your skin against the damaging rays of the sun, but also against pollution. Especially if you live in \u2018the city\u2019.
