Moisturiser (1)

The majority of people need to use a Moisturiser. In the step by step plan this step comes before sun cream. Some Moisturizers contain a Sun Protection Factor (SPF), but in general I think it is wise to use a separate product. I will explain this later in my blog.

The perfect step by step plan

  1. Cleanser
  2. Toner
  3. Exfoliant
  4. Moisturizer
  5. Sun cream

Why use a Moisturizer?

There is much more confusion about the Moisturizer than any other product. Seeing the vast range that are on offer, choosing a suitable product is a tricky affair. The biggest misunderstanding which exists, is that a Moisturizer is capable of removing wrinkles. You should abandon that hope now! What a good Moisturizer can do is make fine lines (especially if the skin is very dry) less visible. In many cases though, as soon as you stop using that product the lines will re-appear. However, don’t be disappointed, as good Moisturizers are beneficial in many other ways…

As its name suggests, the most important function of a Moisturizer is ensuring that there is enough moisture within the skin. This works in two ways;

  1. A Moisturizer ensures that the barrier function of the skin is at its optimum level. Thus the skin is less likely to lose moisture.
  2. A Moisturizer puts substances into the skin which retain moisture (these are particles which work like a sponge).

But Moisturizers can do even more…

Because a good Moisturizer is able to repair the barrier function of the skin, the chances of getting skin problems are reduced. Think of, for example, skin irritation, Rosacea, or eczema. Active ingredients in a moisturiser can thereby sooth an angry skin (the so-called anti-inflammatory substances), make a dull skin radiant again and also make it smoother and more even.

And don’t forget that regular use of a Moisturizer (preferably in conjunction with a sun cream) can slow down the signs of ageing! All in all, enough reason to go in search of a good product… An added bonus is that you don’t have to look for a separate day, night or eye cream. I have written earlier in my blog that one product can be used for all three.

There is still so much more to tell you about moisturisers. I will continue with this tomorrow (Moisturizer 2).
