Lavender

I have written previously in my blog about herbal ingredients in cosmetic products. People often feel that if a cosmetic product contains natural ingredients, then it is safe and also beneficial for the skin. Today more about lavender.

Lavender in skincare products

This is a good example of a herbal ingredient that is very often added to skincare products. However nice it smells, and I love seeing it in my garden, I wouldn’t want to put it on my face. It is well known that lavender can irritate the skin and when combined with oxygen it can produce free radicals. So in theory, that would mean that it can ‘age’ your skin instead of ‘rejuvenating’ it.

Hormones?

This ingredient is also a phyto-oestrogen, meaning that it is capable of imitating female hormones. In 2007 an investigation was carried out which showed a relationship between breast development in boys and the use of shampoo containing lavender and tea tree oil. Although it can hardly be called scientific evidence when only three test subjects were used, it does make you think. More about this later (you can read here the abstract from ‘Prepubertal gynecomastia linked to lavender and tea tree oil).
