Getting Older

As you get older wrinkles appear, that’s nothing new. But it takes a long time and energy before the first wrinkles start to show. The older you become the less able your skin is of completely recovering from damage (for example due to harsh cosmetic products, the sun or air conditioning). A young adult’s skin needs between 1 and 3 days to recover, whereas for someone in their 50’s the skin takes between 3 and 6 days (Cosmeceuticals, Zoe Draelos). So it not so strange that cosmetic products that you could use without any problems when you were younger, may now irritate your skin.

Sebum production and cell renewal

From your 20’s onwards sebum production reduces by 23% every 10 years. Although it may feel nice initially ridding yourself of oily skin after puberty, many people eventually end up suffering from dry skin. To make things worse; in your 30’s the cell renewal process begins to slow down. Your skin finds it more difficult getting rid of dead skin cells and can look more dull and grey.

Anti-oxidants

Between the age of 30 and 50 the amount of anti-oxidants in your skin reduces by about 35% (The New Science of Perfect Skin, Daniel Yarosh). Just when you need them the most! Anti-oxidants are required to destroy free radicals which among other things are caused by external damage such as smoking and sun exposure. Without anti-oxidants these free radicals very gradually damage the cells in the skin. You get wrinkles, pigment spots appear, your skin begins to sag and the chance of getting skin cancer increases.

Luckily there is help, and I’ll tell you more about it later.
