Acne Improves in the Sun? A Myth!

The story is that acne improves by exposing your skin to the sun. Not true! The sun is never good for the skin (with the exception of some skin disorders). The sun dries skin out. An adverse reaction is that the sebaceous glands produce more oil resulting in greasy skin and giving bacteria a chance. It is therefore a myth that the problem of acne is resolved in this way.

Acne improves if you keep to the following important points in your skincare regime:

  1. Keep your skin clean. Use a mild Cleanser, your skin shouldn’t feel taut or greasy after washing.
  2. Use a product containing 1-2% Salicylic Acid (an Exfoliant). With this you can get rid of dead skin cells. After this always use a sun protection cream as your skin is more prone to damage from the suns rays.
  3. A Moisturizer (day/night cream) is only required on the dry areas of the skin.
  4. In addition to this you can choose to use a product containing Benzoyl Peroxide (available at a chemist) or visit your doctor.

If you have tanned skin it can appear that you don’t have acne, as it is less noticeable. Acne is also related to stress which may be reduced in the summer (for example on holiday).

What is important is that you keep your skin clean, stay out of the sun and slow down.
